Nestled in the hills of Clarendon is Mocho, a lush,
rural district renowned for its rich agricultural
heritage and high-quality produce. The area also
boasts natural resources such as bauxite and is
home to a legacy of outstanding Jamaicans,
including musical legend Derrick Morgan, Olympic
gold medalist Dr. Arthur Wint, and celebrated
media personality Fae Ellington. Some cultural
scholars believe this rural gem may even be the
inspiration behind the Mocho referenced in Louise
Bennett-Coverley’s beloved poem “No Likkle
Twang”, where a mother humorously laments that
her son “sound like him deh a Mocho,” (also known
as the back of beyond), a phrase often associated
with rural, isolated charm.
Building on its rich history and proud legacy, the
community of Mocho is now seeking to spotlight
another outstanding feature- its reputation for
producing arguably the best avocados (pears) in
Jamaica. In celebration of this unique distinction,
Mocho Homecoming Limited is excited to
announce the upcoming Mocho Homecoming
from August 9-15, 2026, a vibrant series of events
aimed at uniting residents, welcoming back past
community members, and celebrating our shared
heritage.
The highlight of the week will be Jamaica’s firstever
annual
Mocho
Pear
Festival,
a
signature
event
that
will showcase Mocho’s exceptional produce,
culture, and community spirit.
